The Port of Portland’s Terminal 6 is a multipurpose, 419-acre facility that features five ship berths and an on-dock rail yard. Autos, containers, and breakbulk cargo are all handled at T-6. Considered the Port’s most versatile terminal, shippers have the option to move their product by rail or sea through T6 which comprises nearly 200 acres of multi-use space and an intermodal yard.

Twenty years ago, the Port paved its first pervious asphalt pavement at T6 Berth 601 Yard. The Maintenance Department was given direction to “sweep once a year or as needed to keep the pores open.” At the time there was not a product like RePLAY on the market for treating pervious pavements.  

Now, the asphalt has reached the end of its predicted useful life but is performing well, with just some minor raveling.  “It was built as a 20-year pavement, but it is still performing well,” Port Pavement Program Manager Craig Stewart said. “So the Port is going to try to get more life from it and put off an expensive, time-consuming reconstruction project.

To that end, the Port decided to treat 197,040 square yards of its asphalt yard with biobased RePLAY Asphalt-Rejuvenating Sealer to slow binder deterioration and postpone a reconstruction project.  

This year the Port treated a pervious roadway at Marine Terminal 4 (T4), a portion of which three years ago was used as a demonstration to show how easy RePLAY is to install. This year the full RePLAY treatment took 30 minutes to cure and open back up.

Last year, the Port treated a freight-heavy road used for deliveries to and from major shipping and logistics companies (AirTrans Way) at Portland International Airport with RePLAY.  Cores were taken before and after applying the sealer. Stewart said RePLAY softened the asphalt and met the specifications the Port was hoping for. The roadway will be tracked for the next nine years with yearly pavement surveys and drone flights documenting the pavement performance of RePLAY treated and nearby untreated pavements.
