Frequently Asked Questions
This should answer many of your questions, but we’d love to talk to you further.
General
How does it work?
Applied by directly spraying on new or existing pavement, RePLAY’s low viscosity enables it to flow easily into cracks and surface voids to seal them, penetrating a depth of 0.75” to 1.25” (and even up to 1.75”) within the asphalt concrete layer in minutes.
For existing pavement, RePLAY seals disintegrated asphalt surfaces and halts further degradation of the aggregate matrix from pavement surface and hairline cracks, thus decreasing pavement permeability to water (by up to 95%). As a sealant it protects the pavement against harmful chemical contaminants and deicing salt penetration, tightening and adding density to the existing asphalt binder, which improves its resistance against UV damage.
What is RePLAY?
RePLAY is a biobased agricultural oil seal and rejuvenation agent that has proved, both in the laboratory and field, to be a cost-effective and efficient preventive maintenance treatment for asphalt pavements since its introduction in the United States in 2003.
How is RePLAY used?
RePLAY is a spray-on product that can be applied to pavement quickly and easily (with no specialized training necessary).
Material & Performance
How does RePLAY perform against competitors?
Unlike other sealants (and repaving), RePLAY is completely clear. No restriping is necessary after an application and, in fact, the existing striping’s lifespan is also increased. Reflectivity remains unaltered.
How long can RePLAY extend pavement's lifespan?
If RePLAY is applied shortly after paving occurs, it has proven to increase the lifespan of pavement by two to three times. A single application of RePLAY has been reported to add up to five years to the pavement’s service life.
What is RePLAY's chemical makeup? Is it harmful or sustainable?
It is completely nontoxic. RePLAY is derived from 40% soybean oil, 48% other botanical and/or fruit oils, and 12% recycled polystyrene (Styrofoam). It gives off no off-gases and leaves no oil tracking once cured. And it is safe around people, pets and foliage. The use of RePLAY removes harmful greenhouse gases, giving it a “carbon-negative footprint.” Additionally, RePLAY doesn’t make pavement black; it reduces the thermal index (reflects the heat) to mitigate urban heat island effect.
Cost
Is RePLAY expensive?
It’s very inexpensive compared to repaving. If RePLAY is applied early in the pavement’s life, an agency can achieve a long-term cost savings of several hundred percent compared to cost of traditional asphalt overlays.
Application
How long does RePLAY take to cure?
Thirty minutes. And it can be applied at night, during low traffic hours. Generally, it is not as temperature-sensitive as bitumen-based products, which means it can be applied nearly year-round.
Does RePlay Work on Porous Pavement?
Yes. RePLAY enhances and bolsters stormwater management by strengthening and increasing the lifespan of porous (pervious, permeable) pavement. It’s the only sealant that does this without affecting the porosity of the surface, which is used to mitigate stormwater runoff.
Has RePLAY been proven in the field?
Yes, and widely. The States of Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri and Minnesota have approved RePLAY for use on its roads and freeways; Nebraska has additionally specified RePLAY as an authorized “joint sealer.” Due to its ease and speed of application, RePLAY has also been rated by American Trails Council; repaving trails is very difficult and expensive due to access and pedestrian interference. And in Oregon, the City of Medford has been using RePLAY for the past nine years to restore and/or preserve all of its city streets and roads.
